Joanne Bennett, Michael Harris and Karen Westhorpe each have varied roles at Advantage Healthcare in Telford, working in Governance, Marketing and Finance respectively. In early 2016, they came together to deliver an inspiring work placement programme for local students over two weeks.

Rather than the typical work experience; shadowing managers, making tea, photocopying or sitting through endless presentations, students were given an innovative itinerary that would see them learn about multiple departments.

Interactive activities enhanced the programme, which was based around an engaging workbook designed specifically to make the programme easy to follow, record and to reflect on.

Some particularly popular sessions included simulated scenarios such as running a branch and crisis communications. Students also learnt valuable transferable skills such as profit & loss management, resource allocation, interview techniques, CV writing skills and much more.

The feedback both from the schools and students alike was very positive and enthusiastic. One student commented, “I got a great understanding of the business and it helped me understand what future career I want to go into.”

Schools in the local area are now queuing up to be part of the work placement programme, which has now been picked up by Advantage’s Group Early Careers Team who are rebranding it for use across the divisions.

Libby Bush, Head of HR at Advantage Healthcare commented, “Together they have developed an incredibly professional placement programme. It is considered a centre of excellence and is the envy of many students. We already have schools asking us to do it again for them.”

The work placements team have been shortlisted for the Advantage Group Annual Awards on 11 November. Good luck Joanne, Michael and Karen!
